Tani's Top 20 documentaries that you can watc

Sorry I haven't posted in a while. Life's been crazy, don't want to go into detail. If you want to hear some funny stories, catch up with me in a bar at the next con and I'll explain it to you. Plus finals are coming up, combine that with my 40 hour work week and I'm a tired Tani. I usually find a good documentary to watch and go to bed. Which brings me to the main purpose of this post, my top 20 list!

If some of you haven't guessed by now, I love documentaries, and reading non-fiction too. Nerdy stuff like math theory and international mass transit studies and shit like that entertain me. For the last year or so these films I have selected are by far the best that I've seen (but there are still more awesome films online). Best of all, so many documentaries are avalible online FOR FREE. Blockbuster movies and 90's TV shows may be under lock and key, but ain't nobody tryin's to protect knowledge! I rated these based on the flow in which the film presented the thesis and that it is visually pleasing, that it somewhat unbiased (though that is kinda impossible since the objective of a documentary is to prove a thesis or confirm an observation), and shows lots of good verifiable evidence. The last determining factor is honestly subjects that are favorites of mine, like astronomy, African American history, and number theory. I highly recommend these films so find a nice bowl of snacks and a loved one and watch some stuff that is entertaining and informative though sometimes a little propagandistic (but I'll forewarn ya'll on those ^_~). If you've seen some of these too let

1. The Science Channel's lindex=1&hl=en"Super Massive Black Holes (45m)
This is such a cool doc. Ever wondered how galaxies are formed? It's not that complicated.

2. National Geographic's lindex=0&hl=en"Journey of Man: A genetic odyessy (in 13 parts) (125m)
Everyone in the world is distantly related. Find out how as a scientist tracks the genetic family tree of mankind.

3. The History Channel's lindex=0"The Kings: from Babylon to Baghdad (full version) or in 9 parts at better quality on You Tube (130m)
In order to know a people you have to know their history. This doc examines the history of the fertile crescent, the birthplace of civilization and of course war.

4. Albert Nerenberg' lindex=0"The Definition of Stupidity(71m)
This is by far the most most poignant film ever about stupidity.

5. Achbar, Abbott and Bakan's lindex=1"The Corporation(185m)
If a corporation was a person, what kind would it be? A decently balanced examination of the practice of corporate personhood.

6. Chris Paine's lindex=2&hl=en"Who Killed the Electric Car?(92m)
Now if we can just hook them all up to a GPS and internet network and give them a little AI I'll never have to learn how to drive! Ha ha ha!

7. Byron Hurt's lindex=0"Hip Hop: Beyond Beats and Rhymes(55m)
A very in depth look into hip hop culture and how it defines gender roles and sets the standard for acceptable behavior. Very solid presentation.

8. Ewing and Grady's lindex=2"Jesus Camp
I'm sure everyone has at least heard something about this film. It is a rare opportunity to see and understand the lives, beliefs and motivations of fundamentalist Christians.

9. Bill Still's lindex=0"The Money Masters
This documentary is long, and can be dry at points. So make sure you have a free day for this one, but oh my good the history of banking is so facinating and answers so many questions as to why our economy is the way it is.

10. Media Education Foundation's lindex=1"Big Bucks Big Pharma (in 6 parts) (68m)
Not only are drugs expensive, they aren't that innovative either. The beauty of what happens when you marry medicine with marketing.

11. ABC's When the Moors ruled in Europe (102m)
Learning about the history and accomplishments of Muslim culture makes me hate fundamentalist jerks even more. Its amazing that they could come from such a rich and advanced history and want to keep their own people in the stone age.

12. Nova's lindex=0"The Elegant Universe (in 2 parts) (18m)
And you thought the music and effect in Super Massive Black Holes was cheesy? Wait to you get a load of String theory in PBS vision! very Brilliant.

13. BBC Horizon's The Boy with the Incredible Brain
Okay, so this may only be cool to number theory nerds like me, but it's still an awesome doc.

14. Robert Greenwald's Iraq for Sale (75m)
This film brings me sorrow and rage. We deserve better than this. I want our money BACK.

15. Brave New Film's OutFoxed: Rupert Murdoch's War on Journalism
Warning: this film features excessive amounts of Fox news and you should be in top physical and Mental fitness if you want to attempt to watch. Damn good argument.

16. Mike Watkiss'Colorado City and the Underground Railroad (in four parts on the bottom right side of the web page. Note: you have to register witht he site, but it's free. 30m)
After the Texas Compound raid I started researching into polygamy. this was the most in depth piece I found on the subject. Its very sad though, but I'm glad I understand more about it.

17. Professor Helfand's lindex=0&hl=en"Astronomy lecture series part 1Part 2 and Part 3(about 85m each)
Okay, so this is really geeky. A basic lecture, not too flashy, but if you have to take college astronomy this film teaches you everything you need to know. As a bonus Prof. Helfand gives an interesting theory on how SuperMan may have gotten X-Ray vision.

18. BBC Horizon's lindex=3&hl=en"A War on Science
Evolution fights back! Get your argue points for your next encounter with an "Intelligent Design" advocate.

19. Ian Xel Lungold's lindex=1&hl=en"The Mayan Calendar Comes North Part 1 and Part 2 (total 180m)
Another super nerdy doc that was made on a low budget. Sometimes hard to follow, but what a great concept if you can grasp it. Note: His predictions at the end are a little nutty, but up until that point he was solid.

20. Peter Joseph's Zeitgeist(120m)
I will admit, the majority of this film is heavily propagandistic, but but the first segment's argument of religion's original link to astronomical phenomenon and corresponding natural activity is solid.

Whew! That took a while! I hope you guys enjoy. Let me know if you like or don't like one, or if you know other good ones. Enjoy!

Oh yes, even as a child I always liked the idea of animal characters. When I was 6 I hung out with my cat so much and felt so connected with her that I told my friends I must be part cat (I also noticed my eyes were cat shaped too, that also assisted in that theory). Anyhoo I like that aspect of character creation.

Art is art. It testifies about anything, but when it testifies for God, it's like a lion being let out of it's cage.
